Khushi's Dose of the day (28th Feb 2013)

Khushi's dose of the day!!!

Like any other house, our house is also filled with conversation revolving around health n fitness these days. My 3.5 yr old daughter picked up the vibes n has become very weight conscious suddenly! I m not one of those mothers who find their obese children cute, so don't discourage her of being self conscious!! One fine day...

Khushi: Mumma mujhe patla hona hai! I want to become thin
Mumma: Then run more in the park
Khushi : But I run everyday in the park
Mumma:Then don't sleep immediately after having food
Khushi: ohh!! Ok I will not sleep after having food (After thinking for a second) .....Mumma Santa is Motu becoz he sleeps after having food in the afternoon? Is it Mumma?

Incredible BHARAT!! Part 2

27th Feb 2013
Incredible Bharat!!

We were driving down to Munnar from Bangalore by road. On one busy signal in Tamil Nadu we saw this hilarious sight.

We heard a loud voice from a speaker, "Yes, this side! white maruti van you can go now!! PO!PODA!!". And to our amazement it came from a traffic police standing in the middle of the road with a black cordless microphone. That poor guy was shouting on top of his voice and managing a huge traffic with this mic in his hand. It sounded like a vegetable vendor selling veggies on the road!

We Indians find such innovative ways of using technology that no one else in any other country can imagine. Some examples are using a proxy messenger to connect to office messenger from home, hair dryer for drying seepage areas, Old Cds/DVDs as decorative pieces, old refrigerator as cupboards! List can go on....

Avani's first walk :)

Avani had just turned 11 months and is always a very cheerfuly kid. Being a working mother, I had compromised innumerable wonderful first moments of this little angel. Her first giggle, first time when she sat, first time when she stood, I have always seen the repeat telecast of her firsts.

So one fine day when I returned from office after a long tiring day, I held both my daughters, one 3 yrs and another 11 months in my laps and was playing with them. Suddenly I saw, Avani is standing more confidently and she was trying to take a step forward without any support. I wasnt sure if a 11 month old kid can actually walk, but since she was always early than her age. I encouraged her to walk a few steps.

She fell down each time she tried and the more she fell down, the more she was determined to try. She did not give up and at her 6th attempt she finally succeeded. She was elated as were we. She giggled and stood again, she walked again. Initially she fell after 2 steps, then 3 and then she was successfully taking 4 steps without falling.

I was a proud mother that time. It was like falling in love all over again .I wanted to share my joy with the whole world. I called up my husband, who was busy in an office meeting, but I wasnt going to listen to any excuses. I just fumbled with words as the mother in me wanted to dance, wanted to cry with joy!! Then I called my mother, my sister in law, my close friends and everybody who mattered!

A mother is always happy on her kids achievement much more than her own achievements, thats the most wonderful thing about motherhood :).

Umar baachpan ki, baatein paachpan ki!! Part 2

24th Feb 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

Conversation of my 3.5 yr daughter with my staff in the morning
Khushi: Kanak Didi, don't make dinner today
Kanak Didi : why?
Khushi: I will make food today (in my kitchen set)

On call with her Dad in the evening!
Khushi: I hav made dinner for u today
Papa: wonderful, what hav u made for dinner?
Khushi: Apple custard and sabji (vegetable curry)
Mummy interferes : what abt Roti or Rice?
Khushi to her Dad on phone: Papa please bring Roti n Rice from a restaurant while coming from office!

I m sure their generation will hav no home cooking trend n even if they have it will be as above!

18th Feb 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

Khushi : What is this area named?

Mummy : Silk Board (A crowded area in Bangalore)
Khushi       : Why is it called Silk Board?
Mummy : Because they have silk production plants here
Khushi : What is SILK?
Mummy    : Its a type of cloth, smooth, shinny and very soft
Khushi      : What I am wearing is it SILK?
Mummy    : No thats cotton!
Khushi      : Mummy how do they mix silk with chocolate?

Khushi is 3.5 years and doesnt know how to read, but she must have heard in some commercial on TV about CADBURY DAIRY MILK SILK. And her inquisitive mind got stuck on SILK and when she heard this word again, she co-related!

14th Feb 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

Mummy to Papa : If we get this deal (some office deal), we will be a star overnight!!
(Khushi was busy reading a book but with the above conversation became alert and innocently interrupted!)
Khushi : No Mummy, please dont become a star!
(I was confused why is she objecting that, then realised we tell her "Dadima and Daddu have become star!" when she asks us where are her grandparents)
Mummy : No baby, not that star, I am talking about being a rockstar!! Rockstar wala star, not sky wala star!!

Innocent minds of our children are so fragile that mere thought of going away from their MOMs make them restless!! Unconditional LOVE!!

13th Feb 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

Khushi: I have made a Mail bag in school and written my name and surname on it
Mummy: (Checked the Mail bag which had only name and no surname on it) Khushi, your name is there, but what about surname? BTW what is your surname?
Khushi: SARAAWAAGI
Mummy: No we pronounce it as SARAOGI and not SAARAAWWAGI!!
Khushi: No our surname is SAARAAWAGI, my MAM told me that our surname is SAARAWAGI
Mummy: Khushi, the spelling is SARAWAGI but we pronounce it as SARAOGI. Its our surname so we know how to pronounce it. Infact you need to tell your MAM that we are SARAOGI's and not SAARAAWAGI
Khushi: Mummy I am telling you, listen to me, we are SAAARAWAAGI's and not SARAOGI!!
MOMMY GAVE UP!!

12th Feb 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

I made a Valentine day card for a competition in my office and won the first prize in it. When I brought the card at home, she already assumed that she is my most loved person and the card is made for her. To reciprocate to my gesture, she insisted on making a V card for me.
She asked me for ideas and I told her to draw our family. So she drew four stick figures for Me, Ashish, herself and Avani respectively. Then she wanted to draw something more. So I asked her to draw whatever each one likes! So for Ashish she said, cricket and I drew a cricket bat in his hand. Then Avani she said drinking milk, so I drew a bottle of milk in Avani's stick figure, then for herself she said reading books, so I drew a book in her hand. Then I asked what about mummy? She thought for sometime, then she replied "FOOD"!! Oh Man, I m still confused, did she mean "EATING FOOD" or "COOKING FOOD"?

Does she need to be that brutally honest always !! :P

5th feb 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

I read Khushi a story of Cindrella from a story book. As an intellectual child she doesnt only hear the story but absorbs it with all her imagination attached to it. So as usual I asked her to summarize the story in the form she remembers. Since she is too young and she is still learning to make long sentences I usually help her with the organization of her words, so our conversation followed as below

Khushi: Cindrella had two step sisters, they went to shopping and went for parties all the time
Mummy: And Cindrella did all the household work, like cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing ,,,and like...(I expected few more house hold chores as an answer !!)
Khushi: Like Didi's(My support staffs at home)

The small association of Cindrella with my house maids made me feel so bad and I almost felt like the step sister in the Cindrella story!! I cannot even explain her that they do all the house hold work for their lively hood as Mom and Dad do the office work for theirs! Kids sometimes unknowingly touch the wrong chords of your heart!!

30th Jan 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

My staff who looks after Khushi told me that Khushi and her friend had a fight in school and they are not talking to each other

Mummy: Khushi, what happened between you and your friend?
Khushi: Nothing
Mummy: Did you fight with each other? Why did you guys have a fight?
Khushi: No, I did not fight, nothing happened Mumma, there is nothing
Mummy: Ok no problem. Next time anything happens in school let me know
Khushi: Yes Mumma, dont worry. I will handle!

Wowwww,,when did my little baby who needed help in everything became so big that she can handle her own problems :)

30th Jan 2013
Khushi's 2nd dose of the day!!

I was playing a game with khushi. She and her friend were suppose to tell me the names of colours one by one. They played fair for sometimes and then this started

Arya : Green
Khushi : Light Green
Arya : Blue
Khushi : Light Blue
Arya : Purple
Khushi : Light Purple

Next time instead of teaching her Light green and dark green I need to teach her Sap green and Olive green and golden yellow and chrome yello to make sure she doesnt take such shortcuts!! Gen Z u see!!

22nd Jan 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

As a practise of teaching her one new thing everyday, I asked her to point out 20 square things in the house.
She instantly started pointing out square things like square cushions, square coasters, square tiles and then after a
while she started pointing rectangle objects.

Mummy: No, I have asked for square objects, these are rectangle objects, so they dont qualify
Khushi: Its ok Mamma
Mummy: No its not ok, I want only square objects, not rectangle
Khushi: Mumma if we cut the rectangle objects little bit they become square!

18th jan 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

It was dinner time. Khushi had already drank some 2 glasses of water and she wanted more and I refused!
She quietly went to grab Avani's water bottle. It wasnt too much of a fuss because even if she takes water from that, only few drops will come out, so I choose to ignore! She dropped few drops of water in her mouth, then she realized that its better to invert the bottle in her bottle, that ways she will get more water. Then further when the flow of water was less, she pressed the bottle and succeeded to get a consistent flow of water and finally fill half of her bottle from Avani's bottle of water. Mission accomplished!!
This is how our kids learn to do "Jugaad" in India :P
(Ofcourse she could have opened the bottle and put the whole water in her bottle, but since I was watching her, she choose to do it in wraps! :P )

14th Jan 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!! + Incredible Bharat!!
Today morning, Khushi tells me,
Khushi : "Mummy we are punjabi right?"
Mummy : "Why? Who told you we are Punjabi? We are all Indians, we are first Indians then because we have slightly different cultures, we call ourselves, Marwari, Punjabi, Marathi, etc. But who told you about Punjabi's?"
Khushi: "Mummy, we celebrated Lohri yesterday and you told Punjabi people celebrate Lohri!"
Mummy: "Yes, we did celebrate Lohri. But we also made Undhiya which is a dish made by Gujrati's during Sankranti and we also made Till Laddoo which is made by Maharashtrian's on Sankranti and we also made Sarsoon saag and makki roti made by Punjabi's.And we will also make Sweet pongal which is made by Tamil people.
Similar to the concept of doing a pookalam on the day of Onam and similar to the concept of making Bengali aloo dum and luchi on Durga pooja.
So the crux is, whether we are Marwari's or anybody else doesnt matter. Whatever is fun and whatever we like, we can do it as INDIANS! "
Our kids who are growing up in multi cultural environment are far more culturally aware than what we would have been at their age!! Thanks to the vastness of our Incredible Bharat!!

11th Jan 2013
Khushi's dose of the day!!

Khushi: Mummy why dogs do Bhow bhow!!
Mummy: That is how they communicate! Like we use Hindi/English language, barking is dog's language!
Khushi: Why dont they talk as we do? Why cant we teach them our language?
Mummy: They cannot speak our language, God has not made birds and animals to speak like us.
Khushi: Then how can some parrots(Macau) repeat what we speak?

Now mummy has to google as to how Macau's can repeat/learn to speak like humans and not dogs !! Thank God we have Google!! Mom-Dad I salute you for answering our questions, even without the help of google!

Umar baachpan ki, baatein paachpan ki!!

27th Dec 2012
Khushi's dose of the day!!!

I was teaching her to draw stick girl n boy.Suddenly she draws a stick boy n says
Khushi : This is Papa boy
Mummy : How?
Khushi : See na!! It's a Papa boy!!
Mummy : what's the difference between a boy n Papa boy?
Khushi : Papa boy has whiskers !!!

12th Dec 2012
Khushi's dose of the day!!
Khushi playing in the park with some coins. A South Indian friend of me comes near her.
Aunty: What are you playing with?
Khushi: Rupaya
Aunty: what?
Khushi: Rupaya...Paisa
Aunty: what?
Khushi: Money... Money
This is the story when she was 2.5 yrs and we did not know her vocabulary had 3 synonyms for one word, though in different languages!!Which Barron's will b used for their GRE? Food for thought!!

10th Dec 2012
Khushi's dose of the day!!
Me and Ashish drinking tea in the morning. Khushi having her cup of milk. Avani trying to get hold of my cup of tea
Mummy: No Avani, you cannot have tea.Not good for you, you will become dark :)
Khushi: Mumma, you want to become dark?
Reminded me of the latest No smoking commercial in which kids request for a lighter to the people smoking around to light a cigarette. We know its not good for health, still as adults we have all the right to indulge in it coz nobody on earth can dare preach us what to do and what not to do!! :)..

3rd Dec 2012
Khushi's dose of the day!!!!
We took Khushi to see the Christmas decorations in Leela Palace yesterday. On our way to Leela Palace, Khushi started a conversation as below
Khushi : Santa has already come.
Mummy : No not yet, he will come on Christmas day to gift all the kids
Papa : Khushi ke Santa toh Papa hai, hai na Khushi
Khushi : Nahi aap nahi ho
Papa : Kyun beta, mein hoon na tera Santa, mein to tujhe kitne gifts deta hoon, to mein hoon na tera Santa!!
Khushi : Nahi papa, aap to papa ho, Santa to DADAJI hote hai :P

23rd Nov 2012
Khushi's dose of the day!!!

Ashish left for Mumbai for three days.
Next morning Khushi sees a t-shirt in kids room where I packed Ashish's bag.
Khushi: Mumma, Papa forgot his t-shirt here only
Mummy: Oh yes, now what should we do?
Khushi: Call him and send it through phone
Mummy: How can you send a t-shirt through mobile?
Khushi, realizes that something is wrong in her suggestion, so covers up like a smart ass
Khushi: Mumma, we can take some gadget from Doraemon and send it through mobile na, he must surely be having some gadget in his pocket!!

25th July 2012
"Khushi's dose of the day!!

Yesterday I made an Asian salad with all leafy vegetables and red/yellow capsicum, zucchini, corn etc. Khushi relished it and at the end, she asks me, "Mommy why have you put basil in the salad?"

At her age, I couldn't make out any of the vegetables forget herbs and oils. I think now along with brains, they also have enhanced taste buds!! What is next? :)"

16th July  2012
"Khushi's dose for the day!!

Avani gets up at 5.30 in the morning yesterday and starts howling.Khushi wakes up and comes on our bed, near Avani and whispers in her ears."Avani,, baby,, dont cry.You know today is Sunday, its a fun day!!

3. When Mom dad were in US (2005), Khushi was here in India looking after the house."

Who says 1 year old cant express?

21st Feb 2013
Avani's dose of the day!!

I bought some fruits and vegetables charts to teach my 1 year old Avani.Avani is by nature a hyperactive child who cannot sit at one place for more than 1 minute, so reading books to her is just an impossible task for me. I thought if I start with simple fruits which she loves would be a good start. So here we go...

Mummy : Avani, this is papaya
Avani : ppppppppppppppppp....
Mummy : Papayaaa
Avani : Paapaaa
Mummy : No papayaa
Avani : Papaaaaaa
Mummy : Ok another one, Apple
Avani : Aaaa
Mummy : Yeh, AAple
Avani : Aammaaa
Mummy : aaPPLLEEE not aaMAAA
Avani : AAAAMAAAAAA
Mummy : Ok, try this one,, Banaana
Avani :
Mummy : Bananaa
Avani : Na na na na na na

We have a full family of fruits at home :)

16th feb 2013
Avani's dose of the day!!

Avani is 1 yr old and a complete drama queen to start with! Whenever she got hurt on her head( which is usually prone to bang here n there for a toddler) I used to massage her head with my palm.

She has associated that gesture to convey that she has got hurt. So now if shez hurt on her right side of head, she still rubs her left. If shez hurt in her elbows she picks up the same elbow and rubs her head. The cutest thing she did yesterday was she got hurt on her knees n she rubbed her head.

I have heard of the brain being in the knees but here it's vice versa!!

7th Feb 2013
Avani's dose of the day!!

Yesterday, I was a little late to office, so I hurried to get out of the house . Avani sensed the same and started holding my hand and dragging me somewhere. I held her hands and went with her. After reaching the pooja room, she pulled me down and asked me to sit infront of the temple. And then as usual she sat on my laps and started clapping.

Literally proving the statment "Children are the messengers of GOD". In my haste I forgot to do daily pooja, so she reminded me in her own unique way!

Actually, Avani and I do a small pooja everyday and after the pooja she gets mishri(sugar cubes) in the form of prasad. So how can she afford to forget her daily dose of goodies?"

22nd Jan 2013
Avani's dose of the day!!

I gave Avani three table tennis size balls to play.
She grabbed one ball in one hand and second ball in another hand.
She looked at the third ball for couple of seconds then with the decisive look kept the ball in right hand on the ground,
picked the third ball and put it in her mouth. Then again held the last ball in her right hand.
So with the two balls in one hand each and the third in her mouth she walked gloriously in another room. Mission accomplished!!

"Avani's dose of the day!!

There were two pairs of socks lying on the bed. Avani picked one pink n one red socks. Then started walking. Suddenly she realized something, stopped got back kept the pink sock, picked the red one. Then she gave me both the socks n signalled me to make her wear that. Did she actually understood that two reds make a pair??"

Incredible BHARAT!

Everyday while I have nothing else to do in the car when I am travelling on the busy roads of Bangalore, I notice innumerable hilarious, sad, frustrating, cute, ugly, cool, useless, lovable, annoying things on my way. Again these things happen only in MY INCREDIBLE BHARAT(I am not RSS suppoter, INCREDIBLE INDIA is a registered trademark so dont want to use that one :P).

After an overwhelming response to "Khushi's dose of the day!!", I have thought of starting a new feed called "Incredible Bharat!!". So here is my first feed!!

08 Jan 2013
Incredible Bharat!!

In India you may not find a hosptial or a school on every nook and corner of the city/villages, but you will definitely find a local Wine shop at every half kilometer all over India. So as usual while driving from my house to office I came across one of the Wine shops. While waiting for the signal to turn green, I noticed something which I find so ironical, hilarious about our Incredible Indians :).

A group of 6-7 village ladies, in sarees and their head covered (pallu) were standing near the counter and enjoying their drinks at 11 in the morning.

"Khane ko paisa ho na ho, daily dose of Daaru is a must!!"

09 Jan 2013
Incredible Bharat!!

While driving to office yesterday, I saw two ladies sitting in sarees behind a guy who was driving a bike. Owing to their lean structure, they sat very comfortably in that limited space. The middle lady seemed a little older and she was continuously talking in loud voice with her paan stained teeth.Strangely, there was no reaction/conversation from the other two people sitting on the bike. I was amused, so I tried to figure out whether she is blabbering to herself! To my amusement, she was talking with two ladies in a bus across the road. Around 50 mts distance from the bike.
We in networking world are devising communication devices everyday for making communication effective and diminishing issues due to distances. Here in our Incredible Bharat, we have such effective communicators, for whom distances and noises from 100 vehicles doesn't matter!! :)

Incredible Bharat!!

While walking on the footpath near my office, I saw the coconut vendor as usual sitting under the tree on the gate.I noticed his daughter sitting in her school uniform next to him reading a book. His daughter was well groomed with neatly tied plates, clean school uniform and black school shoes and socks.

Then suddenly, I noticed that the coconut vendor I see everyday was wearing a old torn red shirt with extremely dirty pants and a broken hawai chappal. His hair was not oiled and he badly needed a hair cut. He limps with one leg and probably knows no other skill than cutting coconuts. I would have never noticed him if it was not for his daughter who was so contrast to him.

That's how we see contrast everywhere in India. That coconut vendor probably knows only to count till 1000 and he aspires to send his daughter to school in the hope of a better future for her. He is physically challenged but wants his daughter to challenge the world. He is happy with his rags but never want to compromise on her daughters uniform. Tomorrow when his daughter grows up to be another Chanda Kochar or Kiran Mazumdar Shaw or even a small school teacher, how proud that guy would be!! I am so proud of such Indians!! Incredible Bharat!!

12th Feb 2013
Incredible Bharat!!

English is a very funny language by itself. And English in India becomes all the more funny when some very interesting people try to adapt it in their day to day use.
We had an old house maid who used to take care of my mother in law. She was a very restless, aggressive and frustrated soul by nature. So one day, she asked me what should she cook for dinner on phone? I told her u can make anything. And she started replying in a loud voice
" Bhabhi, aap bata do, mera to HEADING kharab ho jata hai sochate sochate! Meri aankhe dukhkar PAINING ho rahi hai, mein ROUNDING marke aati hoon outside se!"
I would have been angry in the normal scenario as I was very busy, but her usage of English made me smile in the middle of the stressful work and I told her I will get food from outside, you relax!
This is just one example of the murder of English language I have come across, there are infinite examples you might have also come across in everyday life. Share if you remember!

20th Feb 2013
Incredible Bharat!!

As a general practise, I would greet the security guard on the main gate of my office with a smile everyday. Everyday, he would check my car with his so called bomb detection mirror and hide away his face asap. Today, the same security guard was checking my car and since I was in my own world forgot to do the ritual of smiling and greeting him. To my surprise the guard who never seem to recognize my greetings waited infront of my car, gave me a smile and with a welcome gesture showed me the way inside.

The guard might have not recognized my greetings everyday, but when they were missing, the change was noticeable.I think this is why they say "No good gesture done ever goes in vain!" and also "We realize the importance of small things in life when they are gone!"

Now, why have I written this under Incredible Bharat? There is a strong reason to it! Initially I used to find people in US very weird, anybody you pass by, they greet you with a smile and also "Hi/Hello" most of the times. I used to think, "Do we know each other?". Later I realized it is the normal practise of greeting everybody you cross and not doing that is considered impolite.

And on the contrary to that, in our very own Bharat, even if we know each other by our first names, many times people ignore each other on the roads as if they don't exist. I know so many people who might pretend to be your best friend when you meet them one to one, but on the road, if they cross you, they are strangers. Come on guys, it doesnt take any effort to smile and greet people! I dont say you do that to strangers as Americans do, but atleast make the world around you a cheerful place!
